Pessimism V.S. Optimism… Or Both?

I took the ACT this morning, and it was… different. As my dad was driving me to a high school in the area I live in (not the one I go to every day), my emotions were quite mixed. Naturally I was nervous and slightly scared, but I was also exited. When I told my father this, he basically said that those three emotions were normal. What went through my head was, “Sure, but if you knew why I was exited, you would rethink that statement.”

I’m one of those crazy people who likes homework. I also enjoy studying, taking tests, and taking quizzes. Weird right? It shouldn’t be! I have noticed in myself that if I am positive about taking a test/quiz, I will do well. If I know I did poorly and I feel awful about the test/quiz before I take it, I will end up with a bad grade. I can conclude that my attitude affects my score on examinations and my grades. I believe that optimism helps you succeed. For me, it helps me succeed in school. I am a straight A honors student and enjoying the difficulty of my classes instead of stressing over them constantly. It may also help me in a variety of daily activities, school being the most noticeable. Therefore, be positive.

One reason I was excited for the ACT is because it was a challenge. It was the ‘ultimate’ test, so naturally I would enjoy it since I like taking tests. Who enjoys taking the ACT? Who enjoys taking the SAT? I enjoyed parts of it… the last two tests gave me some more chalenges than the first two, but I should be alright.

Optimism is needed, and sometimes I am an optimist, but most people considered me to be a pessimist before I created this blog. Pessimism is necessary for it allows me to see all that is wrong within myself and the world. I am able to see all of the flaws in society because of my negative outlook on life. Pessimism is needed in life, although many would say that I am wrong.

I need both pessimism and optimism in life. It allows me to further my understanding of the world and life. They must be in balance with each other, for you can’t have one without the other. I suppose it is like yin and yang in that way.

The point of this article:

Some people are weird, but maybe their weirdness is justified. Perhaps they are correct in their ways; perhaps you should adapt your instincts and daily routines/mindset so that way you can better appreciate life.

Some people are optimists and others are pessimists. You need both in order to truly understand life, but you need to know when to use those mindsets in order to make the world better. Pessimism must be used to identify problems, but optimism must be used to solve the problems. I guess I’m a realist and I’m hoping you will become one too.

  6. So true Elia! It is good to be an optimist, but without a good dose of reality, so you don’t want to always wear those”rosy glasses” and don’t see life as it is. I don’t think one needs to be a pessimist…. There is enough negativity in the world , Being an optimistic realist is the key!
